Story
Let us take you back to the start with what should have been a routine health screening on our newborn baby Troy. We could tell right away that something wasn't quite right; from the exchanged looks between the nurses, to the silence that fell while they carried out their tests. We were referred to a specialist unit where Troy was diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) at birth. So many questions ran through our head...What was the cause? Was I to blame? Did I do something wrong during my pregnancy? Why us? Why our beautiful little boy? We were completely shocked, confused, helpless...What should have been a joyous occasion for us all soon grounded to a halt while we came to terms with the news. At just six weeks of age, Troy was given his first set of hearing aids. Our baby boy was having to the learn the world that we know without the ability to hear, while we were having to learn a whole new world of non-hearing. National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) reached out with open arms to help guide us on our journey in creating a world with no barriers for our son. They offer advice, support, information, connect us with other families who have similar experiences and hold events for us to join together. Four babies are born deaf every day and 90% are born to hearing parents with little or no experience of deafness. Hearing impaired people communicate in a unique way, using visual language to open our eyes to the world that we think we know. Troy is now receiving all of the help he needs and will have cochlear implants at the age of 2 years. He is like any other happy, healthy, growing boy and beyond. Troy has taught us so much so far and we cannot wait to continue the journey with you.
On Saturday 26th August 2017, I (Nee-Troy's mum) will be doing this charity skydive with my sisters San, Sunita and niece Sheena to help raise awareness and money for NDCS so that they can continue their amazing work in supporting families who are in desperate need.
