Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Today I was @sanctus_homeless_cafe. I cook there most Tuesdays. They provide free meals for the homeless , the hungry and the food poor. They rely on donations from both shops, businesses and individuals. EVERY DAY THEY PROVIDE 60-80 MEALS, 100s of cups of tea & coffee, endless rounds of toast & bowls of cereal. They provide a community space for people with many problems, helping not only by feeding them but by helping with CVs & job applications, giving users online access & phone charging, helping them apply for accommodation, signposting to other services - alcohol & drug addiction etc It is a place filled with love and laughter - but also anger, sadness, swearing & aggression.
Cafe Manager, Sandra, is like everyone’s mum. Service users respect and protect her. She takes no prisoners but is a big softie inside! Today I cooked Bolognese. One of the users says it was the best he’d ever had. This makes me happy 😊
So here’s the thing...
It costs a lot to keep a place like Sanctus open and not everyone “approves” of it as a charity. Some don’t like the homeless hanging around the cafe before it opens... 🙄
But these people didn’t choose their circumstances - the difficult family backgrounds, the bullying at school, falling into addictions. Nobody wants to be homeless “when they grow up”. I know it’s complicated but I’m just trying to do my bit. That includes organising a Community Harvest Feast Fundraiser hosted at St Marys Church, High Ongar.
I’ll be serving a 2 course fabulous feast full of harvest fruit and vegetables for a suggested minimum donation of £15 - BYO drinks - on Saturday 7th September at 7:00pm. Tickets from Eventbrite - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/harvest-supper-fundraiser-for-sanctus-homeless-cafe-tickets-64633760317
But if you can’t come to the event and would like to donate here instead I know Sanctus would be very grateful.
