Story

TL;DR please donate to this wonderful charity!

Hello all,

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I hope this means you are already half considering donating to this amazing cause!

HVP stands for 'Hindu-Vidyapeeth', a Sanskrit word from the Vedas meaning 'centre of knowledge'. With three branches in central Kathmandu, Dang, and Thali, these schools are founded on the belief that an education which promotes both academic excellence and training in spiritual, cultural and moral values will best equip a child to face life's challenges and to serve humankind. HVP offer full sponsorships (including school fees, accommodation and meals) for children otherwise unable to attend schools. These are children who live in remote areas, children whose parents are too poor to send them to school, and those with difficult home-circumstances. It is also a charity and has a 20-year connection with Cambridge, as well as Oxford and Durham.

To those of you who had no idea I was going to Nepal this summer and are feeling a little miffed at being kept out of the loop, that is only because this was a very last-minute decision on my part after I saw Cambridge Volunteers in Nepal post on their Facebook page that a few slots had become available after some cancellations. Always up for a spontaneous (or, as my friends might say, reckless) challenge, I immediately signed up and was offered a place! As you can see from my cover photo, I am hard at work trying to master some basic Nepali before I begin my mini gap year 2.0...!!

All jokes aside, this is a really worthwhile charity and I have done extensive research into it. I would love to be able to raise more but I thought I would set myself a realistic target as I will be leaving on Tuesday 23rd July i.e. in barely over a week! I hope to be able to do some more concerted fundraising on my arrival. And who knows? - maybe I'll even agree to do a sponsored run or, heaven forbid, forego Pret for a month (!!)

Rest assured donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with them and they will never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity so it will save them a lot of time and effort as well. To reiterate, not a penny of this is to cover my own expenses. All the money will be used to support ongoing projects at the school, cover the cost of books, teachers' salaries, food, accommodation for the boarders and so on. Now more than ever, they are in desperate need of funds for the new school building at HVP Central after it was destroyed in the earthquakes back in April 2015.

Here is the link to the school in case anyone else might like to have a browse: https://www.hvpnepal-uk.org.

Thanks for reading and have a lovely summer!
