Story

The wonderful Sue Fagan amazing story. xx

On 3rd July 2015 our world was turned upside down!

My wonderful partner  Klaus Wolfgang Thurn ( full title!)' Wolf', was diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer!  We were attending the hospital for what we thought was a normal investigation ....cancer was the last thing on our minds!  The diagnosis was delivered quite bluntly really, and we were not at all prepared.  We left the hospital that evening, stunned and shocked, wondering how we could deliver the news to our families.

Wolf, approached the whole thing right from the start in his usual strong and determined way. One by one we informed family and friends, the hardest being his wonderful daughter Michelle as she had only recently returned from travelling and obviously returned full of joy only to be given the worse news imaginable.  After numerous tests and doctors visits, we met Wolfe's Oncologists at Christies and it was rather a 'good cop - bad cop ' scenario, and we were all given his diagnosis, six months with no treatment and one year plus with treatment.

Wolf embraced  the treatment with the great positivity and strength he does with everything in his life.  He was given a 'triple does of chemo' and by the end of the six month treatment, the tumour and nodes  reduced by almost 50%!   He is continuing to be scanned at Christies every three months, and we await for the next positive news so that we can plan our dream holiday to Bali and Australia.  A trip of a lifetime, to see our dear pal Pauline, and her wonderful family!

As if the news for Wolf had not been enough, I was diagnosed In October 2015 with breast cancer!  This was found through a routine mammogram and was so small that it wouldn't have been found for some time!  So ladies please don't ever miss that important visit!  I have been offered a comprehensive treatment plan by the wonderful Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe, and of course the amazing Christie Hospital!

I felt I was visiting 'home from home' when I commenced my chemo at the Christies,  knowing my way round, getting friendly 'nods' from people as I walked along the corridor. One thing Wolf and I have always been amazed by is the time people have for each other at the Christies. Yes, you may have to wait to see your doctor / nurse, but nobody minds, as this is usually because someone else needs their time, and that's fine! The love, support and genuine compassion can be felt, and it makes it that much easier to get through the journey!

Wolf and I consider ourselves strong and positive people, but no one can be prepared for the diagnosis of 'Cancer'  it does change you, but I can only say that through it we have experienced such immense love and support from our wonderful family and friends, we couldn't do it without them!  THANK YOU ALL! XX

Wolf and I want to give something back to Christies, as the fight will continue.  We hope our family and friends can support us to do this by joining us on the Walk of Hope on 17th September 2016 at Tatton Park.
