At 11 weeks of age my beautiful granddaughter Imogen was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma (a rare form of cancer in both eyes). She has already had an MRI, lumbar puncture and bone marrow biopsy. She has had 2 examination and some laser therapy under general anaesthetic, the placement of a central line for the administration of all her medication,1 blood transfusion and she is on her second round of a planned 6 sessions of chemotherapy - rather a lot for a baby to deal with.
As you can probably imagine I felt pretty helpless and needed to find some way to channel my frustration and need for control, not easy in the Covid era we are in. Then, a light bulb moment - "what is the distance between UHW in Cardiff and Birmingham Children's Hospital?"
Lorna and Mike make this journey every 3 weeks with Imogen as Birmingham is a centre of excellence for treating Retinoblastoma and are coordinating her treatment with Noah's Ark Children' Hospital at UHW Cardiff where she is receiving her chemotherapy.
The answer to my question - 190K
Including the session Imogen has just received, Imogen has 5 treatments remaining, which is 5 more trips to Birmingham. So, every 3 weeks for the next 15 weeks I intend to walk 190K which will be a total of 950K. This I will fit around my work commitments and within Covid restrictions.
I have chosen CHECT to fundraise for because there is a real need for research into this rare form of cancer and they also give support right through to adulthood as in many cases treatment will continue beyond the initial few months.
I would be so grateful for your support with this endeavour. It would be amazing if you felt you could donate, but I know times are tricky and I would equally value your messages of support and encouragement.
Thank you

"We know that when a child is diagnosed, it can be a distressing and frightening time for everyone, and we are here to help. We also understand that for some people retinoblastoma can have a long term impact and we offer lifelong support for anyone affected – from diagnosis to adulthood. We’ve been helping families for more than 30 years but we don’t receive any money from the government and we rely on public support to fund our vital work."
