In Jan 2019 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After numerous appointments and tests one month from getting that news, I would walk into the Churchill unit at Bolton hospital for the first time. I was referred to undergo 6 rounds of chemotherapy before my planned operation. Other than seeing people on the tv going through chemo I had never been around anyone who had been diagnosed with cancer. Or anyone that had received any treatment so did not know what to expect. Anyone that knows me knows I was petrified of needles, I soon had to get over that fear!! As soon as I walked onto the unit I realised that my life would never be the same again......
All the nurses and staff you meet go to work everyday with big smiles and turn the horror of receiving chemo into a happier experience.... I say happier but the nurses were still pushing needles into my arms!!! Every 21 days I would go back for my next round not only knowing that the chemo was making the cancer shrink but my visit would lift me a little bit more and make the fight much easier. The unit and staff within it had done so much for me I vowed at the end of my treatments that I would go back to help in any way I could. In July I had my operation but popped in often with biscuits just to say hi. As soon as I was physically able to I applied to become a hospital volunteer. I wanted to give something back and as I was still recovering, gifting my time would be easier than trying to run a marathon! However I do have a very close friend that has agreed to run the Manchester half marathon and raise money for the Churchill unit. On Sunday 24th May 2020 Shelley Hill will be running 13 miles (whilst wearing a very Pink tutu) and we are looking for as much support as possible so we can put even bigger smiles on the faces of the staff within the Churchill unit and hopefully help put some smiles on the faces of the patients that are facing the fight of cancer everyday.
Thank you to all the staff who work at the Churchill unit..... you are all amazing xx
