Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the UK dealing exclusively with myeloma. We provide information and support to patients and their families and help myeloma patients live longer, with a better quality of life by accelerating the discovery, development of and access to new treatments.

Story

Hi everyone thank you for taking the time to visit our page.

Dean Wootton was recently diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma - a blood cancer arising from the bone marrow. It affects bones of the spine, skull, pelvis, ribcage and the long bones of the arms and legs.

Dean’s symptoms started off just before Christmas, mostly with severe back ache which then moved to his ribs, along with weight loss and feeling lethargic. He would often say his bones ache. After a number of GP and hospital visits, blood tests then a CT scan, he was eventually diagnosed with myeloma in February.

The first stage of treatment is called induction chemotherapy which will put the myeloma into remission. The next stage will be stem cell transplant along with a high dose of chemo. There is no cure for myeloma so at some point in the future it will return.

This was a huge shock to everyone who knows Dean -and he knows a lot of people! We are overwhelmed with the offers of support and well wishes from family, friends and colleagues near and far.

Jeff, Peter and I hope to boost Dean’s fight against this terrible illness while also raising awareness to help others in obtaining an early diagnosis. The money raised will go towards:

• Researching the genetics of myeloma and developing personalised treatment strategies
•Testing new treatments in clinical studies
•Ensuring patients access treatments quickly
•Improving standards of care
•Supporting and informing patients and families

Please wish us luck and help us meet our target! The more you donate, the faster we will run ;)

Thank you for your support!
