Next year I will turn 40, and to mark the occasion I have set myself various challenges to complete before I reach the end of my 30’s. One of these is to walk over 40 miles in a day! Therefore on the 23 June, my friend Rachel and I will be walking 42 miles in the Lake District as part of the Rings of Shap walk. If all goes well, we should complete the walk in around 14 hours.

This may be a huge challenge for me, but it is small compared to the challenges faced daily by those living in extreme poverty around the world. A woman in rural Africa may walk more than 10 miles every day just to collect some muddy water, children may walk miles to get to their nearest underfunded school and people may be so far from the nearest health facilities that it is simply too far to walk.

I am outraged that in today’s world billions of people still live in poverty. Yet I still believe that we can do something about it. I’ve worked for Christian Aid for the last 8 years, and never failed to be amazed by the incredible work our partners do providing urgent, practical and effective assistance where need is greatest, tackling injustice, the effects of poverty and its root causes. The long term approach Christian Aid take helps people to find their own solutions empowering them to build a better future.
