Story

A WET, WILD, WINDY WEEK!

Charlie Bear is keeping our travel blog:- http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog/charliebears/1/tpod.html

.........Yorkshire Dales, Northumbrian Moors, Scotland, Lake District & winding Welsh Hills … very blowy, wet & wild… seemed like riding at a 45% angle just to stay 'shiney side up' braced against the high winds.

Thanks for taking the time to visit this JustGiving page.

Bikers Saddled with Sarcoma Hit the Saddle.

Lyndsey Pratt and Colin Barlow both have forms of the rare cancer Sarcoma, and as fellow bikers met at the Royal Marsden Hospital where they are both on drug trials.

Lyndsey has Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) and Colin has GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumour). Both are sub-types of the rare cancer Sarcoma.

Sarcomas make up only about 1% of all diagnosed cancers & there are up to 50 differing sub-types, so research and treatments are limited.

Colin with his friends Martyn & Leigh planned a sponsored motorcycle ride over 5 days , and with Lyndsey and husband David made up a team of 5 bikes. We visited hospitals currently treating GIST in the UK starting on Monday 23rd November 2009 in hope of raising both awareness and funds for

                                                            The Sarcoma Trust.

                                                                              and

                                                   Royal Marsden’s Cancer Appeal

Colin is a  motorcycle chauffeur in London- to read about him & see how donations are going for Royal Marsden please have a look at Colin’s page. http://www.justgiving.com/colinsgotthegist/

Starting at the Marsden London, the route took in hospitals at:-Cambridge(Addenbrookes), Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Newcastle upon Tyne, Manchester(Christies), Cardiff and Bristol and back to The Marsden. Approx 1200 miles in 5 days - We were prepared for wet & cold but not the extreme wet & wind that we encountered!

I (Lyndsey) caught the bike bug from David when we met 27 years ago, but decided last year when we bought the Honda PC800 that I wanted to  brush up my skills, so joined Solent Advanced Motorcyclists (SAM) and hope to take my advanced IAM test soon on my F650GS.

I was diagnosed with LMS in the pelvis 5 years ago, and was initially told it was inoperable which was devastating. After a change of mind and major op’ from an amazing surgeon , the Marsden has given me a fantastic quality of life since - In under a year I was able to windsurf & sail, then the next year skiing in the Alps, last year, a motorbike tour as far as Pisa, and then earlier this year Micro lighting & Horseriding in New Zealand.

Since the initial surgery in 2005, I’ve had two bouts of radiotherapy, and then this year chemo, so a new hairdo and I am now on ‘maintenance’ treatment, but I still feel great & am looking forward to quite a few more adventures. I want to say a big thank you the fantastic team at the Royal Marsden, which is a very special hospital. We also want to help raise awareness and support research into Sarcoma so your donations from this page go to the SARCOMA TRUST and will be very much appreciated.
