Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Speakeasy is an extraordinary charity helping people who have had a stroke, head injury, or some other neurological condition to communicate again.
We are so lucky to have it here in Bury helping people from across the North West as well as locally to be able to participate in day to day conversations we all take for granted.
Imagine waking up one day to find you could no longer say the things you wanted. That every time you grasped for a word you were unable to say it, unable to make yourself understood. This is aphasia. Of course the NHS will help you, rehabilitate and stabilise you, but NHS care can only do so much. To be able to spend time with other people who are experiencing the same thing, to contribute to a wider community, for your family to be able to meet others who understand how they feel...it is invaluable
Speakeasy also help the medical profession to make sure the information and guidelines they produce are aphasia friendly and are accessible to all.
Speakeasy has received no funding from the local health service or council for some years now. In times of austerity this sort of funding is the first to go. Without regular income, applying for charity grants becomes more difficult as they see a risk in investing. And so the spiral continues
As many of you know I am a stroke nurse. I see the difference this charity makes day after day. Please help me to raise some much needed funds to continue their excellent work.
