Story

In loving memory of Sophie, wife, mother & friend who has died after her brave battle with cancer.

Sophie worked as a nurse for almost 40 years, with nearly 20 years working in Ophthalmology, the Visions Vision for Bangladesh Charity was founded by her dear friend Rachel Andrews

Vision for Bangladesh was created by Rachel, who started her work in Bangladesh in 2006. After winning 'Nurse of the Year' award in 2008 award, Rachel used the prize money to fund a few children in Bangladesh to have sight saving surgery due to the extreme poverty of their parents. Her voluntary work continued, becoming an officially registered charity in 2017.

Sophie wants people to donate to this wonderful charity to help it continue with its amazing work, she always said “what better gift can anyone give than giving sight to someone else”.

Sophie was first diagnosed with cancer several years ago but continued to work until April this year, when she retired on medical grounds. But her dedication to healthcare saw her elected as a public Governor for the East Kent Trust after she retired.

Her kind and generous nature was perfect for nursing and it’s all she ever wanted to do.
Sophie’s interest in nursing began as a child and was encouraged by her late father, Brian Lewis, who was an anaesthetist at the William Harvey Hospital.
She joined St John Ambulance volunteering and as soon as she was old enough she started nursing training at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. She also worked at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford before spending two years working at St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.

Sophie also worked at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, and West Suffolk Hospital, where she helped set up the eye treatment centre, before joining East Kent Hospitals 10 years ago.

Sophie, 55, leaves her husband Scott, and their two children Aurea & George who are both in their 20s, who will miss her greatly xxx
