One of the many things which helped make my dad my hero was his love of hill-walking and mountain climbing. Every Sunday for the last few years he, and a trusted companion or two, would pick a mountain somewhere in Ireland and head away to ascend its summit. The Mournes were one of his favourite places to go and he would climb there more often than any other mountains.

The 13th of January of this year was just like any other of those Sundays. He decided to go for just a short walk through the Mournes and up Binnian with a friend and would be back for lunch.

He never made it back. He fell on the climb up Wee Binnian and was found shortly after by his walking companion. The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team were called and tried to come to his aid. There was nothing they could do to save his life as he died instantly in the fall but they stayed with him and his friend for hours in tricky conditions to make sure that he came down from the mountain and was able to be returned to his family.

While they were dealing with dad they received a second call about another fatal fall which occurred within an hour of dad's fall. Shortly after that there was another call for a separate fall.

The Team were in the mountains for over 9 hours dealing with the calls. As a group of volunteers they all had day jobs to go to the next day.

I can only imagine the horrible scene with which they were met up the mountain. I, and my family, will always be thankful to them for the professionalism and dedication they showed that day to make sure dad got down the mountain and home to us.

As a wider family circle we are taking part in a Mud Fun Run on what would have been dad's 64th birthday on 16th June. I will be doing the run with Lucy and Oisín with Eilbhe cheering is on. Anyone that knew Dad would know this is exactly the sort of event he would have loved to take part in himself. It's his child-like enthusiasm for events like this that we want to try and keep alive.

He was much loved, more than he realised or ever acknowledged, and he is sorely, sorely missed every single day he is not with us.

Any donation you can make to this fantastic organisation in memory of my dad would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Shane Byrne
