Story

At the end of June, cavers from Sheffield University Speleological Society will be completing the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association's (UWFRA) Wharfedale 3 Peak challenge in the Yorkshire Dales. UWFRA volunteers have rescued people and animals from the moorland, crags and caves of the Yorkshire Dales for over 60 years. Rescue services are free, and teams are on call 24 hours a day: UWFRA relies entirely on fundraising events and donations in order to make this possible. Many require this aid including the animals living on the fells, hillwalkers, cyclists, and cavers.

This year we are taking part to say thanks and give back to UWFRA who rescued 5 members of our club this past Mother’s Day that had been attempting a Providence Pot to Dow cave through trip but became trapped by high water. After searching through the night, they were found at approximately 6am by 4 UWFRA members and reached the surface after 24 hours underground.

The event has been running for 5 years now and is the largest event to raise money for UWFRA. There are 3 routes of varying challenge, the biggest being the 22-mile route covering Birks fell, Buckden pike and Great Whernside which our members will either be walking or running. We would be grateful to anyone who can support us in this event and donate even a little money to this good cause. Thanks.
