Story
I am fundraising for the La Alianza programme in Guatemala via Compass Children’s Charity. Some years ago I visited the programme (then Casa Alianza Guatemala) and met a woman (we’ll call her Maria), who had a profound effect on me. Living with an abusive partner and several children in a corrugated iron shack with one room, one large flea-ridden mattress and no running water, her situation seemed hopeless. Born into extreme poverty, the chances of her escaping that cycle of poverty and abuse were minimal.
My song, Accident of Birth, is for and about Maria. How sad that our life chances are so often determined by our birthplace. Please click on the YouTube link to hear the song.
