Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

It is now 2 years since my wonderful husband of 21 years Peter passed away from renal cancer after an amazing 3 year battle. We were lucky; Peter received world class care in the hands of the NHS at Luton & Dunstable Hospital, The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore and finally Mount Vernon. Three major operations, drug regimes, radiotherapy and finally a drugs trial gave us a very special time to build extra memories.

So how have I ended up training to run a marathon? Two months after Peter passed away I saw an advert for a 10  week beginners running course at the local running club, Dunstable Road Runners. Although I'd never run before I thought I would give it a go and if I could eventually run 5k I might try and raise some money for CTRT.

I was probably the oldest beginner and certainly one of the slowest but as the weeks progressed I gradually improved. I discovered I loved running, made some amazing new friends and gained a "running family" who along with my children and old friends help me through the difficult times.

So almost a year ago I signed up to run Brighton Marathon! Since then I have run lots of races, including several half marathons, I've spent the winter months building up my distance through training runs and now that I believe I can complete my marathon it seems the perfect time to raise some money for the Cancer Treatment and Research Trust. the research charity at Mount Vernon,  in memory of not only Peter but also Rob Hornby, a good friend we made, who also sadly passed away last September.

So this is me trying to give something back for the wonderful care Dr Paul Nathan and his staff gave us at Mount Vernon, but also wanting to make Peter, my children, family and friends proud of me because now I am a runner!

When cancer affects you or someone in your  family nothing is ever the same again; it changes lives. So please spare some pennies for an excellent cause to help find treatments to beat cancer.

Thank you so much,

Love Shelah xx
