Story
On March 8th me, Sam and Jim will be running the Grizzly. We will be raising money for CALM, any donation will be extremely appreciated. As someone who has not been directly affected with mental health but close to those of which lives have been affected by this in one way or another it’s important for me to do what I can to help raise awareness for such a great cause. After completing the Tough Mudder with Dan, Jack and George and raising just shy of £1500 pound for the charity, I was looking for another challenge and I stumbled across the Grizzly.
Grizzly 2020 will take place on Sunday, 8 March and the event has been named "2020 Hills aplenty” - so you’ll be pleased to know it won’t be flat! The grizzly is a 20 mile all terrain run over a multi-terrain route including bogs, streams, beaches, clifftops and ascents/descents up/down steep hills.
The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK.
As of 2016:
> Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year.
> In England, 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (such as anxiety and depression) in any given week.
> As a result of this, 20.6 in 100 people consider taking their lives while 6.7 in 100 will attempt to.
These figures do not include the number of people experiencing mental health issues in hospitals, prison, sheltered housing or people who are homeless. This means that the number likely underestimates how common mental health issues are.
Effects of mental health are not always visible. I am raising awareness to encourage people with mental health to speak up - particularly young men.
Our goal is a life less miserable for you, your friends, your family and for all men. CALM PROVIDES:
>A free and anonymous helpline 0800 585858 and webchat (5pm-12am daily) staffed by trained professionals
>Bereavement support
>A website www.theCALMzone.net with inspiring content by men for men
>Campaigns tackling stereotypes of masculinity, suicide and male mental health.
Help us save lives.
