Story
I am very fortunate to have been selected as one of the 15 young people from across London and Essex to take part in a charity skydive. This jump is one of a number of events this year to mark the 15th anniversary of the youth charity the Jack Petchey Foundation.
On top of that, I am being given the opportunity to raise money for any chosen youth charity of my choice. With it being a very big and important event, I decided that I wanted the proceedings that I raise to contribute to a charity to whom I believe would put my beliefs into action in fighting gender inequality, promoting girl's rights and lifting millions out of poverty. Early and forced marriage is a violation of human rights that destroys girls' childhoods, preventing them from carrying on their education and causing them to end up being stuck in abusive relationships. Plan UK - Because I Am a Girl gives a voice to girls at risk of child marriage, to defend their rights to health and education, and to give them the opportunities they need to fulfil their potential.
As exhilarating as the skydiving experience will be, I am terrified to jump out of a plane between 10,000 - 12,000 ft falling at speeds of 120 mph!! However, I am committed to get this ticked of my bucket list meanwhile raising money for a truly amazing charity that is dealing with an issue that I am passionate about.
I hope you will be able to join this thrilling journey with me as we begin our pathway to eradicating child marriage and giving young girls the education that they deserve in order to escape the vicious cycle of poverty.
Every year, throughout the world, millions of young girls are forced into marriage. Child marriage is outlawed in many countries and international agreements forbid the practice yet this tradition still spans continents, language, religion and caste.
