Story
Both my daughters were suddenly registered blind (severely sight impaired) within 4 weeks of each other in 2018 due to Stargardts, a rare genetic juvenile macular degenerative disorder currently with no treatment or cure.
At a time when all doors seemed to be closing BBS offered opportunities and chances to try things in a different way, proving to the girls that they can still do whatever they want to in life as there’s a solution to every problem if we take the time to find it. Staying active is vital for both physical and mental health and has given them confidence, resilience and independence to pursue their dreams.
They have proved to me that anything is possible if you set your mind to it, so I will run my first ever half marathons in 2022 - dates have changed several times due to covid and now they fall all together within 6 weeks! Stafford on 20th March, Wolverhampton on 10th April and Birmingham on 1st May. I will honour any sponsorship and continue to run 3 halves even if covid changes the dates again.
BBS is the UK's only national sports and physical activity charity exclusively for people with sight loss. There are more than 350,000 children and adults who are blind or partially sighted and they need our help now more than ever before. People with sight loss are twice as likely to be inactive as people without sight loss and 2/3rds say there are physical activities that they want to do but aren't able to. We need to change this. BBS uses the power of sport to help people with sight loss lead more active and independent lives.
