Story

My mum my superhero - Kim Staples - has been supported and extremely well looked after by the whole team at Bulstrode House who are supported by the Guernsey Society for Cancer Relief - an organisation funded by charitable donations.

My mum doesn't know how to thank the team so to help a little with the charity I am running both the Guernsey half - 18 September and the Royal Parks Half - 9 October to try and raise some money in my mums name as a little thank you.

For those of you that don't know, my mum got skin cancer and after 2 operations she started immunotherapy.  During this time the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world and she was diagnosed with bowel cancer.  She had to have an operation and was all alone in ICU not allowed visitors but being the strong woman she is, she fought through with a smile on her face.

In October 2021 my mum was diagnosed with secondary bowel cancer to the liver and needed an operation, but before that she had to have a course of chemotherapy to shrink the aggressive and fast growing mass.

An operation ensued in Southampton to remove the majority of her liver.  Just hours after arriving back home in Guernsey - merely days after the op - we were back in A&E and then admitted to hospital where weeks of care, a night in ICU and blood transfusions she was diagnosed as having sepsis, pulmonary embolisms on both lungs, pneumonia and liver failure.

My mum my superhero fought all of this with a smile on her face and is still thanking everyone involved and has since had further chemotherapy treatment.

To ensure the Society can continue to do the great work they do in supporting cancer patients in Guernsey, please donate a pound or two.

Thank you for taking the time to read my mums story.
