We are the largest UK charity that supports people with dyslexia & their families, teachers & employers. We aim to change society by breaking through the barriers and enabling everyone with dyslexia to be acknowledged, accepted and empowered.

Story

Hi All, I am raising money for the British Dyslexia Association because I have been very lucky to have the support of many others throughout my life as a severe dyslexic . My dad is dyslexic and so it was fairly obvious to my Mum, in that I needed much more support. We had a long battle with the 1st head of my primary school who did not want to acknowledge or even do anything about my dyslexia. My mum got the support I needed through help of  the BDA and I therefore got a laptop.

That support did not stopped throughout university and most recently I am now working in  the NHS where I had an BDA in work assessment . As well as the practical suggestions we have had some good conversations that have built a stronger relationship with my managers. These things I hope will help others coming into the company and I see myself working here for a long time yet.

I would particularly like to represent the BDA on a bike . Cycling is the best independence and freedom I get . As a Dyslexic, I often have more anxiety and baggage, than most about my ability to learn and work. I can not say how much cycling as been the one thing I can do to channel my energy, relax with and prove that I have something that is mine that I can do well. I hope in riding and supporting the BDA, I can raise the profile of Dyslexia to show it is not just an excuse; that we are all neurodivergence in our own ways.
I am pleased to say that I am different not because of my Dyslexia but as I see 100 miles as a good day out.
