Sponsored Silence · 9 February 2016

SMIRA is a UK-based Registered Charity supporting families and health & education professionals involved in the upbringing of selectively mute children. Selective Mutism is an anxiety based condition whereby those affected, usually children, will be able to speak fluently in some situations but find themselves unable to do so in situations where they feel ill at ease. Families can feel very isolated and distressed and SMIRA was set up in 1992 to offer them support. The condition can affect at least 1 in 150 children but is still little known. SMIRA works hard to raise awareness of the condition and to provide information where needed. The charity is well respected both in the UK and internationally.

Story

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated-I am so grateful. I am curently on day 2 of my silence and it is getting easier as time goes by. Aimee xxx

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I have chosen to do a sponsored silence for SMIRA. This is a charity which helps people with extreme cases of anxiety where the victims are unable to speak in public places or social situations. In some cases, they only spoke to immediate family members. I chose a silence because I thought that it was appropriate, given the charity I am supporting.

The reason I have chosen SMiRA is that it's the charity that helped my mum. She was unable to speak when she started primary school and selective mutism was unheard of. Then in year 8 she was diagnosed with SM. This was because my grandparents' friends came across SMIRA and told them about it. Over the years they got the support they needed from SMiRA and eventually she started to talk to her teachers, friends and all her relatives. Despite the fact that it was a very long process, it wouldn't have been possible without the support of SMIRA. I want to raise money so I can help other people with SM and raise awareness especially in schools.
