Scotland to the Somme 2016 · 25 June 2016

Since 1921 Poppyscotland has been supporting Scotland’s ex-Servicemen, women and their families. Whether a veteran is struggling with a life-changing battlefield injury, psychological trauma, financial hardship, homelessness or has turned to substance abuse as a way to cope, we are here to help.

Story

The Scotland to The Somme 2016 challenge has been set up to raise funds jointly for Poppy Scotland and the Kings Own Scottish Borderers Association. As an ex serving soldier with the KOSB these are two organisations that mean a great deal to me and my fellow veterans.

This challenge will mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of The Somme, probably the greatest loss of life in one day of fighting on the 1st July 1916.  A battle that is infamous in British military history and caused immeasurable grief to families and towns back in the UK.

My challenge is to cycle from Edinburgh to Dover, and then run from Calais to Peronne Road Cemetery in Maricourt, France, finishing the challenge at the graveside of a KOSB casualty exactly 100 years to the day he was killed.

My blog thebattlefieldpiper.com documents the planning and preparation involved with the challenge, my reasoning for choosing this challenge, and the individual casualty I have chosen to research.

I hope you can follow me on this journey and share it with others. If you would like to donate then please click on the option to do that. It will be gratefully received by those who rely on it.

Thank you for your time and support.
