A rather belated but heartfelt thank you to everyone whose incredible generosity made us reach and surpass our fundraising target by a considerable margin!
I believe I speak for all of us when I say that the challenge itself was tiring but extremely enjoyable.
An 0720 start from the Eastbourne Rugby club took us up to the top of Beachy head and along the coast to Birling gap for the first stop after 11km. Which was rather more elaborate than imagined. What we had imagined was a grab and go stop with a snack in one hand and a bottle in the other, but this was a large marquee, 6 types of pastry, fruit, snacks, chocolate bars, hot and cold drinks, and lots of seats to sit down.
Which meant that a 5 minute stop became a half an hour stop, allowing change of socks, fresh air for the toes and shoes – but also cooling down and stiffening up. Taking half an hour stop every 2 hours clearly adds another 25% to the overall time, but it does make it much more pleasant.
The next stop after 2 more hours of sunny walking was at Alfriston
after 23 km, with a rather large lunch laid out.
A further large stop after 35km (pot noodle!, pick and mix sweets!) and a ‘mini-stop’ at 44.5km saw us down in Brighton and along the seafront with less than 10 km to go.
When you have walked for 10 hours, a mere 2 hour walk feels like you’re already there!
Arriving in Hove park after 55km it was going/had gone dark and a glass of bubbles and some (again) rather excellent food with great cakes was just what was needed after a long day’s walking.
Ian and Janette are monster walkers and could probably have continued forever. Russell was close behind and I brought up the rear. Miguel, who had initially planned to walk the 23 km, ended up doing 35 before he went home to work. Real dedication from everyone.
There was only one blister among us and whole lot of tiredness but
the general feeling of achievement and happiness was pervasive.
Once again – thank you to everyone who has supported us and the
Macmillan nurses.
When you see an event like his, the joy and dedication of the people – those arranging the event and those participating in it - and the generosity of the donors, mixed with the beautiful English countryside … it restores some faith in humanity as a whole and makes one realise that we are capable of great things.
Thanks again for all your support – we may well be back with another challenge. Feel free to join us.
