Story
My son Thomas suffers from Dravet Syndrome http://www.dravet.org.uk/what-is-dravet-syndrome/ and has epileptic seizures on a daily basis, mostly when he is asleep. Thomas, and other children and adults like him with severe uncontrolled epilepsy, often gets admitted to hospital due to seizures.
At home, Thomas has a special bed - like a hospital bed but with full lift up sides and soft padding on all the hard areas of wood and metal. At our local hospital, Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), Thomas and other patients like him have to use the regular hospital beds as the hospital has not been able to afford any special beds. This means these patients are at risk of injury during seizures from either falling out of the bed through the gaps in the side or from hitting the hard edges, and it is very stressful for parents/carers and nursing staff who have to be constantly vigilant to minimise the risks.
I am raising money to buy two special beds for Royal Lancaster Hospital – one for the children’s ward and one for adult general medical. Each bed will cost approximately £5000.
