50 Miles Endurance Run for Sport Relief
Four local runners who met at Epworth based specialist running store, Metres to Miles are all set for an Eddy Izzard style endurance fundraising event when they will be running the 50 miles of the Peatlands Way for Sport Relief. The four, Chris Payne (42) of Haxey, Greg Morrell (36) of West Stockwith, Steve Hnatyszyn (40) of Scotton and Julian Moorhouse (40) of Haxey start the run on Sunday 25 March, just as thousands of people will be running the Sport Relief Mile at locations up and down the country.
The four regularly clock up the miles each week, but this challenge takes each of them in to uncharted territory, but with David Walliams with his swim along the Thames and more recently John Bishop with his ‘Arc to Arch’ each feel inspired to push the boundaries. Chris said “We have talked about running the 50 miles of the Peatlands Way for too long and it was Sport Relief which gave us a reason to say let’s do it now”.
The Peatlands Way is a circular route designed to traverse the raised peatlands of the Thorne, Crowle and Hatfield moors and takes in Epworth, High Burnham, Haxey, Westwoodside, Wroot, Crowle and Belton on the Isle of Axholme, extending out to Stainforth and Thorne. The runners will also be challenged by the rugged off road terrain, Steve said “We’ve trained each weekend on the route, its tough going in parts, particularly over Crowle Moors where it gets quite boggy in places. But it’s all part of the thrill and challenge”.
Neither of the runners were keen to talk about target times, only that they intend to run the route rather than walk it and want to enjoy it as much as is possible. Greg said “We will set off at 8 minutes per mile as the training has prepared us for that. But we will need to watch out for one another on route and keep a check on how we feel”.
Julian stressed how the challenge has developed in to a team event “After the weekend training runs on the route we soon realised the need for a support crew to provide energy gels, food and water but also provide encouragement and so we’ve roped our families in. We also have a few runners joining who have offered up to lead out a few miles with us”.
