St Gemma's Hospice is a local, independent charity providing the best possible care and support for people in Leeds with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. We support patients and their families, both in the Hospice and in the community, at any stage of their illness.

Story

Hello!

Over the years I have run in a number of 10k races but I have never run further than 10 miles in my life. (I’ve only done that once and Rob had to pick me up in the car as my legs wouldn’t go anymore!)

Anyway, not one to be put off by having to be picked up by the husband after almost passing out in the Co-op carpark in Ackworth, I decided to sign up to do the Leeds Half Marathon. I want to say it’s because I am passionate about running and keeping fit but mostly I signed up because it means that I will get to spend the best part of three hours on a Sunday listening to my music and not fretting about having to mark a set of books. Plus, I won’t have a child hanging off me or asking me again and again and again for a bowl of crisps. Sounds like bliss doesn’t it? Although, I imagine that running just over 13 miles will be anything but.

Nine years ago my Dad died of Oesophageal Cancer and St Gemma’s cared for him in his final days. It’s a charity I have raised money for in the past and I give regularly when I can.

So if this is a charity that’s close to your heart or if I am close to your heart (!) please donate and I promise that, throughout the race, I will sing along to Meatloaf really loudly every time he pops up on my random shuffle on my running playlist.

Cheers,

Stacey
