Story

Through our supporters we have been able to help Matt to stand tall.

Every time you get up off the sofa and walk across the room, every time you stand up to look out of the window, every time you get up from the pub table to stand at the bar, you are doing something that Matt couldn't do without two people's help. How would you feel if these simple actions were denied you?

The Turbo Trust exists to support people like Matt, who need expensive technology to help them do the simplest of things. There are still many others we would like to help.

For Matt, who is 20 and has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, daily life is a constant challenge, as strenuous as marathon training for both him and his family. His muscles are so weak that each fibre matters. Matt's mother applied to us for help in their appeal for £13,503 for an EasyRise vertical powered wheelchair. This will keep him as active as possible and as fit as possible for as long as possible.

Unusually for someone of his age and condition, Matt still uses a standing frame at home. There are significant health benefits in continuing to stand but it takes two people to help Matt use the equipment he has safely and comfortably. It can also only be used at home. Matt is a student. He doesn't want to be at home all the time!

Using a standing powerchair enables Matt to stand whenever he likes, wherever he is, whoever he is with. It takes a big burden off his family, and help him look everyone in the eye.

We are glad that through your support we have been able to help in a small way towards Matt's comfort and independence, after the NHS were able to fund the main part of the equipment for him. Unfortunately, not all disabled people can make a similar case for NHS funding. These are those we continue to help.

Please note: HMRC rules do not allow tax refund under gift aid if the donor insists it should benefit a named individual so please bear this in mind when making your donation. Gift-aided donations made via this page to the Turbo Trust will go into a fund at the discretion of the trustees. It is the trustees' aim to provide enough money for each beneficiary to order the equipment they need. And the trustees take note of  how funds have been raised when they make grant decisions. The more gift-aided donations received here the more funds the trustees have to help Matt and others like him. If you only want to help Matt and cannot therefore claim gift aid, please contact his family directly, rather than donating here, as justgiving's handling fees will reduce the value of your gift.
