Q: So what exactly is the “24 peaks” and what does it involve?

The challenge involves crossing 24 mountains all of which are located in the English Lake District and over 2,400 feet high with the aim of doing this in under 24 hours. The peaks include eight of the ten highest mountains in England; Scafell Pike, Helvellyn, Ill Crag, Broad Crag, Lower Man, Great End, Bowfell and Great Gable. The event is described as “the ultimate test of endurance" perhaps because of the fact the total ascent is over 13,000 feet.
Q: Who is doing the challenge?

Undeterred by the fact than none of the individuals who have completed this event in previous years have sought to reinstate their places on the Steamship Mutual Team we are an entirely new team who are fresh faced and raring to go. This year’s team consists of some of the finest and motivated individuals who have been uniquely selected for the challenge. The team will be supported throughout the challenge by Tim Lection who will be in charge of logistics. He is known within the team as the “Daddy”, his pearls of wisdom from having previously completed the challenge back in 1861 fill the team with a mixture of fear and excitement. Those who will be undertaking the challenge are; Anna Yudaeva, Michael Archibald, Danielle Southey, Simon Thornton, Felix McClure and Lynne Crossey.

Anna is a former 3 Peaks achiever and soviet defector. Some say she was born to complete this challenge others, however, question whether the Lake District is quite ready for Anna.  Danielle has from the day of selection portrayed an air of calm self-confidence and rumour has it she will be heading off for some secret training in the near future. Another team member who is way ahead in terms of training is Felix. At almost 2 metres high (without heels) he benefits from consistent high altitude training and coupled with his previous career in the army no doubt he’ll be the one nominated to carry extra water and supplies.  Lynne is already training hard for the challenge and putting in some serious time in the gym, one to watch is our lady from the land of TOWIE. Simon joins the team as the navigator. The challenge will put his map reading skills to the test and his aim is to keep the team together and on track. Our final team member is Michael, a favourite with the ladies, he will show that a combination of fine breading and school boy flair will enable him to use his physical strength and power to carry other team members over the finishing line if necessary.

Q: Why are we doing the challenge?

We are undertaking the challenge in support of Seafarers UK as whilst we work in the wider maritime community, our daily lives don't involve any degree of risk or deprivation. For those amongst the Merchant Navy, fishing fleets, Royal Navy and Royal Marines that Seafarers UK helps at times of need, those risks are real and they deserve our support. Whilst we will suffer moderate discomfort during the challenge it is nothing to what some individuals within the maritime industry have to ensure on a daily basis.  We would really appreciate it if you could support our efforts by making a donation to Seafarers UK. We will keep this page updated with photographs of our training and the challenge itself.
