Story
My name is Stephen Black and I live in Halewood, Liverpool.
Six years ago I was outside on my friend’s roof when I slipped and fell 60feet to the ground. I was rushed to Walton Neurological Centre where I was put on a life support machine. I was in a coma for five weeks with the doctors saying ‘even if he wakes up he won’t remember anyone’ but I did.
They say ‘what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger’, how true.
Once I came around I then had the difficult task of learning everything you would normally take for granted from scratch for example: eating, talking, dressing, etc. with God helping me along the way and how he is still is helping me now.
That is how I intend on paying Him back, by helping others less fortunate than myself and that’s why I've decided to help the hospital that saved my life.
In my first walk in water I walked 300 widths (5K) in a time of 3 hours which was a good accomplishment considering I'm in a wheelchair however I like to push myself, so for my second venture I'm going to walk twice as far, 600 widths (10K). You would think it would take me 6 hours in total but I say no. No because I’ve been training hard for the past year and plan on walking faster. This is where all my hard work in the gym plus my pool walking training comes in to its own.
Walton Neurological Centre was very good and welcoming to my family but my family lives in Liverpool so they could easily get to and fro between the centre and their homes. With family members of patients not always coming from Liverpool the Walton Centre is planning to build accommodations to allow the families of patients to stay with their loved ones in their time of need.
Walton Neurological Centre is one of the best hospitals for brain injuries if not THE best in the country so it I’ll make my last venture the biggest and best venture.
