Amelia & Abby's Friendship Walk · 3 April 2017

We are here to offer UK-based advice and support to people with birthmarks and their families. We are a registered charity, set up in 1998 by parents of children with vascular birthmarks.

Story

Amelia was born with a port wine stain birthmark which affects about 3 in every 1000 children.  She has laser surgery which helps lighten the mark and to prevent the mark darkening and thickening as she gets older.  Amelia also has treatment for glaucoma (caused by the birthmark) and will need an operation in the future.  When Amelia was just a few weeks old she developed a haemangioma (strawberry mark) these affect 1 in 10 children and sometimes need treatment and can be very painful.

The Birthmark Support Group is run by volunteers and provides advice and support to people and families affected by all types of birthmark.  Amelia helped with the Family Fun Day last year and really enjoyed meeting other children similar to herself. These days are important for parents to connect and gain information and for children to meet others with birthmarks.

We are raising money to help fund research into birthmarks and to provide equipment such as lasers to help treat them.

Abby and Amelia have been friends since meeting at school when they were just 4 years old and have chosen to raise money for the BSG as part of their Civic Award.
