Story

I am walking for 'The Size of Herefordshire' project, an inspired group of Herefordshire based volunteers who are raising money for the Forest Peoples Programme. The FFP are a UK based charity that are doing extremely important work in trying to protect rainforests across the world.

'The Size of Herefordshire' are looking to raise enough money to help safeguard and sustain an area of the Amazonian rainforest that is the same size of the county of Herefordshire, 2,180 square kms.

Having spent time in the magnificent Amazon rainforest and having been motivated by the great idea that is 'The Size of Herefordshire', I thought I ought to do something to help.

I will be walking the whole perimeter of the Herefordshire border line, which is approximately 200 miles. Going by footpaths, fields and roads I will be camping and carrying my gear as I go. The walk should be around 180 to 220 miles depending on how lost one might get en-route. I begin on May 25th.

We have not yet reached the high-water mark of climate change. But it is in sight. The Amazon rainforest used to recycle ''the CO2 pollution from every car on the planet, every year.'' However, even the massive amazon rainforest is reaching its tipping point in its absorbtion of CO2. We cannot over burden the rainforest any more than we already are as it is crucial in regulating the Earth's climate.

There must be greater efforts to reduce further deforestation.

We all know that rainforests are under constant threat. From illegal logging, mass clearance of forest for livestock and palm oil production, invasion by huge oil and gas companies, corrupt governments and mineral extraction, the list goes on. The deforestation of rainforest is happening at an alarming rate and is not sustainable.
Not only are we destroying one of the most diverse and beautiful eco-systems on our planet but the effects of the destruction are hastening the dire consequences of climate change.

Nonetheless, there are forces working against this! The Forest Peoples Programme seek to empower the indigenous people of the rainforests and protect their land rights. This approach is working and with further donations and support, positive changes can further develop. ''Local people stand to lose the most from deforestation but the most to
gain from its protection. As such, they are the forest’s best possible
custodians.''

I hope you can give generously and help to protect a unique and beautiful part of our world. All donations will go directly to the charities concerned. Let's stem the tide.

BONUS - The Size of Wales will be match funding everything raised by The Size of Herefordshire. Meaning that your donation will eventually be doubled! With your generous donations doubled, we can hopefully raise around £5,000.
