Story

I am nearing the end of my year in Office as the High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire and am hoping to have a final fundraising effort for the High Sheriffs' and Humberside Police Tribune Trust.

It was my intention to undertake the Humber Night Challenge 2014, which is being held on Saturday 5th April 2014.  The Challenge is an overnight orienteering experience aimed at 13-17 years olds from within the Humberside Police area, giving them the opportunity to work alongside the Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Humberside and Lincolnshire Orienteering Club and HM Prison Service.

The Tribune Trust are the main sponsors of the event, where young people, in teams of five, complete a 10.5 mile walk in the dark, using orienteering skills, while undertaking five challenging tasks along the way.  Over 30 teams, involving 150 young people, have registered to compete and will start out from Hull Ionians Rugby Club, Brantingham Park, Elloughton from 5.30pm at 15 minute intervals throughout the night.

Over 100 volunteers will be involved with 70 'shadow leaders' trained by walking the route and terrain on practice walks during the day and at night over the last 6 weeks.  The event is now a major operation.

Unfortunately, due to my attendance at the South Yorkshire County Legal Service early on the morning of Sunday 6th April, I didn't feel I should tackle the walk the night before.  However, I will be undertaking the trek with Geoff Ogden, the Director of the Tribune Trust, on Wednesday 2nd April, albeit during the day.  I am hoping you will sponsor my efforts so that the Trust can continuing supporting the Night Challenge and other similar events in the future.
