Sands is the charity speaking up about pregnancy and baby loss, saving babies’ lives and supporting bereaved families. Together, we are saving babies’ lives and improving maternity safety and bereavement care through research, training and campaigning.

Story

On March 11th 2018 I will be doing the Inverness half marathon and Lesley and Orla will be doing the 5k, and we want to raise money for SANDS in memory of our son Jack David McGibbon. The comforting part of the day, is that the event is on the mothering Sunday.

On April 17th 2010 a day which we would thought, would be our happiest moment turned into our saddest and biggest heart break as parents.  Our son Jack David McGibbon was born sleeping and we were so devastated. The hardest thing any parent shall have to do is bury their own child.

This for us is now something we have to deal and live with but we had so much assistance from the organisation SANDs and people around who had gone through the same heart break.  We remember Jack every day and Orla always talks about here little big brother.

The death of a baby is not rare. Every day in the UK around 15 babies die before, during or soon after birth. That means every 90 minutes a family is faced with the devastation of the death of their baby. This is unacceptable.

So it’s shocking that a lack of dedicated bereavement rooms on maternity wards means mums and dads have nowhere private to spend precious time with their baby before they have to say goodbye.

Raigmore hospital and the staff on the maternity ward and the way they had helped us was great and we nothing but praise for them. They allowed us to have our son beside us before we left the hospital and they respected all of our wishes. Please help us make a difference.
