Story
I am running the Hackney half marathon to raise funds for the world-leading British charity Saving Faces (SF)! People suffer the consequences of facial diseases, injuries and disfigurement every day. Around 125,000 young people sustain serious facial injuries every year but not enough is known about facial disease, injury and deformity, their
psychological and emotional impact and, critically, which treatments are most effective. SF- The Facial Surgery Research Foundation - is taking the lead in education and research to improve the physical and psychological treatment of all victims of oral cancer and other facial diseases. SF was set up by my oldest friend, Prof. Iain Hutchison, whose pioneering surgical work is eclipsed only by his lifelong commitment to put the patient and her/his family at the heart of medical treatment. So my run is a small homage to his tireless energy and innovation in reshaping treatment and thinking about facial surgery and social responses to disfigurement!
