RISC is the Charity i have chosen and a very worthwhile one i feel, My name is Steve Williams and i am one of the directors of Probuild, we manufacture recovery vehicles.
I had an idea to drive around the UK in a recovery vehicle we have built, to demonstrate the quality of our work and raise our profile within the industry. At the same time i thought this would be a good opportunity to do something different to raise money for the industry.
So here i am just about to start my "Probuild Pro RISC Charity Marathon" 4000-5000 miles at 56mph, I should have done this 5 yrs ago when we set up. At least that way i could have got around a bit quicker.
I would also like to thank my better half Karen for allowing me to do this, we have a baby thats 1 next week and i think most women would not be as understanding about the time i will be away.
Thats all i have to say and please give generously !
RISC Mission Statement
The Charity was created to offer immediate assistance, to individuals, working within the Recovery Industry,
Background
Vehicle recovery is as old as the automobile itself. It became an organised industry in the early seventies see A History of Vehicle Recovery for more details, and has always been a dangerous occupation. Over the years many people have lost their lives, or have been seriously injured serving their fellow motorists and various organisation have been formed to offer help.At the European Tow Show in 2005, Nikki King of Isuzu Truck (UK) Limited, suggested that a new fund be set up. It was proposed, not as a challenge to other Benevolent Funds and Charities, but to complement them. Our strength would be immediate support, as soon as possible after the incident (often the most traumatic and distressing time for dependents) and something other organisations cannot always do.
During the summer of 2005 the Trustees Brian Hagen, Debbie Hewitt, Tom Johnson and Andy Lambert, were approached and all agreed to serve. Nigel Schroder agreed to take on the important task of managing the finances,
In October 2005 an 'Inaugural' meeting took place at Warwick. The name Recovery Industry Support Charity (RISC) was selected. It was agreed to register the charity, with the Charity Commission. This was duly completed during 2006.
A year later (again at the European Tow Show), Nikki's dream became a reality as RISC was chosen to be the Tow Shows selected Charity. It came as no surprise therefore, that during the show Nikki King OBE was presented with the prestigious Personal Achievement Award.
