Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. Any donation you can give will help towards this amazing cause. Thank you.

Strengths Partnership and Nelson Mandela Children's Fund began their partnership in February 2013.

Strengths Partnership donate 25p of every Strengthscope® purchase to NMCF, however in addition to this we wanted to take part in the British London 10k to help raise funds for the construction of Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital in Johannesburg

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund is currently raising funds for their latest project, which is to build a dedicated children’s hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. Having raised an incredible £35 million already, which is just over half the total funds needed to complete the project, they have been able to start building the hospital. The sound of children playing and laughing - exactly what Nelson Mandela would have wanted - marked the beginning of construction of the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital in Johannesburg on  Thursday 20 March 2014!

Africa as a whole suffers from a dire lack of dedicated paediatric facilities, with only FOUR such hospitals on the continent – 2 in Cairo, 1 in Nairobi and 1 in Cape Town. These serve a population of nearly 450 million children and the current levels of paediatric service is overwhelmed by the demand for health services with extremely long waiting times. This compares dismally to the 23 children’s hospitals in Canada, 19 in Australia and 20 in Germany.

The hospital will comprise a 200 bed, 8 theatre facility and be located in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa’s most densely populated province. It will also function as an academic medical centre affiliated to medical schools internationally. The hospital will employ over 655 staff including specialist doctors and nurses, and offering training across the nursing spectrum, including healthcare workers. Mr Mandela’s wish was to offer the children of Africa a state of the art hospital, where no child will be turned away due to the inability to pay.  The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital will be a fitting legacy to this remarkable man.

The building of the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital is the one place where the legacy of Mr Nelson Mandela and his love of children exist in the daily life of a child. Every interaction will be an expression of his love and care for children. Through its training and research, the hospital will build human capacity and will spread the ethos, values and approach of Mr Mandela.

We need your help to make Mr Mandela's dream a reality and help children who desperately need medical treatment, get the best care possible.  http://www.nelsonmandelachildrenshospital.org
