London to Paris Cycle 2018 · 25 July 2018 to 29 July 2018 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

So here is the story:

In 2012 I had the privilege of taking part in the classic London to Paris Cycle ride. This was April 2012 and battled torrential rain , gale force head winds and temperatures of about 3 degrees.  I am still in contact with some of the "April L to P Veterans" and raised over £4,000 for Marie Curie Cancer care.

2014, Emma completed the same challenge, this time sensibly picking the warmer month of May, raising in excess of £3,500 for Breast Cancer Care. This was the year Emma's Aunt, my Sister In Law, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, at the age of just 49 years old.

2015, after some noticeably odd behaviour, my Father was diagnosed with dementia by his GP. This was devastating news for Dad and all of the family. He quickly showed more advanced symptoms  and in April of 2015 moved to a local care home, who  continue to provide him with the personal care he deserves and needs, but of course this has left mum alone at home after nearly 60 years of marriage.

2017, it would have been the turn for my wife, Karen, to do the challenge, but unfortunately the booking was deferred as she was also diagnosed with Breast Cancer not long after raising over £600 from a concert with the lovely ladies and men of Norwich Harmony and Fine City Chorus

Emma volunteered to step in as mum's deputy.

2018 - Following a 17 week training programme, finishing with the tough 300 mile cycle ride over four days, both of us enjoyed the challenge, experiencing temperatures up to 42 degrees centigrade. .

Please support us with whatever you can afford for the Alzheimer's Society.

We can assure you that 100% of all sponsorship (plus gift aid) will go to the charity. We have covered all the costs of this challenge ourselves.
