Two years ago I was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer. I had to have surgery followed by radio-iodine treatment. 

I had partial thyroidectomy first and then four weeks later completion thyroidectomy and neck dissection. My son was 10 years old at that time and with a small family, I felt like the whole world was going to end.

Few weeks later, I had radio-Iodine ablation of my residual thyroid tissue. In preparation, I was asked to stop my Thyroxine for two weeks before treatment. I also went on salt restriction to help with success of the treatment. During the second week without thyroid hormones, I was very tired, depressed and weak and was in bed all the time.

During my treatment, I was in the isolation ward for three days and  I could only see my family for a maximum of 30 minutes every day due to high levels of radiation in my body. This was one of the most difficult times of my life.

Few months later, the followup nuclear scans were done and I was given the good news that the cancer is cured. Since then, I have been on 3 monthly follow-ups and all tests are reassuring. 

My family and friends support during this difficult time was extra-ordinary. I was lucky to have been treated by caring and affectionate staff members in hospital.  

As a thankful gesture, I want to raise money and contribute to the Butterfly thyroid charity that cares for patients with thyroid cancer. My friends Dr Nambi Thiagarajan, Dr Saravanan Solai and Dr Vinoth Sankar have teamed up with me for this noble cause.
