Refugee Action - Charioke Marathon · 14 March 2011 ·

Refugee Action provides direct support to people seeking safety in the UK, as well as campaigning for their rights. Our vision is that refugees and people seeking asylum will be welcome in the UK. They will get justice, live free of poverty and be able to successfully rebuild their lives.

Story

The Gal:
Hey guys, it's Suzie. You may know me from such mighty places as the IOM, SU, C@S, WDW, BP, HMV, TBY, E2, CA, GGUK...or from some other random location that can be as equally well abbreviated :D! You've probably seen me smile, dance, laugh and possibly even heard me sing once or twice but….have you ever seen me karaoke??? Doubtful as, to my (vague) recollections, I have never before participated -mic 'n' all- in an actual karaoke performance........…..until now.

The Mission: For the first time ever on March 14th I will karaoke-ing non-stop for 10 hours to raise money for Refugee Action and I would be so honoured if you were willing and able to dig deep and support me doing my best Beyoncé, Rachael Berry or an impersonation/song of your choosing....Plus, if for you seeing is believing and you cannot be there in person YouTube footage will be available post-event as evidence ;)

My challenge is raise a minimum of £400 but whatever you can/want to give is up to you, from a 1p to £100 + it is all greatly appreciated. Thank you :)! You never know, this could be my lucky break...I'll remember you for it ;)!

Or if the prospect of sound of my voice droning on for 10 hours makes you wince and you don't believe it should be inflicted upon the great British public then...I also welcome any donations for me to stop singing too… ;)

The Cause: During the last 10 years for reasons of study, economics and interest I have had the opportunity to move around a fair bit and wherever I have been I have always felt warmly welcomed, cared for and supported. I am so grateful for this and I can't imagine what I would have done without it. My experiences of this are what has inspired me to actively support charities like Refugee Action which assist some of the most vulnerable people in UK society, our refugees and asylum seekers.

Refugee Action is an independent national charity who work effectively and compassionately with refugees and asylum seekers across the UK to help them build new lives and become active participants in our society. Their work includes giving vital asylum advice for newly arrived asylum seekers, community development projects in the arts and sports designed to reduce isolation and to empower and promote the integration of refugees in local communities, mentor services, training for those who work/plan to work with refugees and asylum seekers and the advocacy of women and children's rights in UK detention centres. Those that they support have had to flee their homes from the most traumatic circumstances possible and are reliant on the advice and training provided by organisations like the RA to help them start their lives afresh.

Recent government cuts of 60% this April, however, will make it increasingly more difficult for our asylum seekers and those granted refugee status to access this crucial information and therefore the need to support these services is more pressing than ever. http://www.refugeeaction.org.uk/campaigns/cuts/default.aspx

Furthermore, the UN (Geneva) Convention Relating to the Status of the Refugee turns 60 years this year. For the last 60 years the UK has given sanctuary and hope to those fleeing the most traumatic and terrifying situations. Please don't let this end and help those most in need to receive the assistance that they need.
