We strive to achieve the ordinary in order to help trans folk lead inclusive lives

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit the TG PALS JustGiving page.

TG PALS is a charitable, not for profit, organisation that offers free support services to transgender people and their families and training for other agencies. We gratefully utilise the skills, training and experience of our team, all of whom are unpaid volunteers and have extensive experience of the transgender spectrum.

We strive to help transgender people lead fully inclusive lives and to 'achieve the ordinary' ...the everyday activities and choices people make that give life purpose, meaning and value.

TG PALS functions purely due to the generosity of its supporters. We are based in Kent but respond to any request for support, advice or information, signposting where necessary.

Our TG PALS and partnership services:

  • Peer support groups for transgender people;
  • Peer mentoring;
  • Life coaching for transition;
  • Youth engagement;
  • Law clinic and peer advocacy ;
  • Family outreach support;
  • Partners support group;
  • Post-op buddy scheme;
  • Employment skills and support
  • Transgender personal fitness and wellbeing courses
  • Drop-in centre.
  • Counselling
  • NHS Sexual health services
  • Equality & Diversity training placement for police officers, school, college and university students.

We  strive to educate and inform people in order to break down barriers. We work face to face in many public settings at open events seeking to promote social inclusion and safe, cohesive communities.

Our work with transgender people aims to reduce social isolation and incidents of suicide and attempted suicide. 35 % of transgender people presenting for treatment have informed clinicians they have attempted suicide at least once. We believe this to be a conservative figure.

Following our own study of 43 transgender people using our peer support groups in May 2013 the respondents admitted to either multiple suicide attempts, a single suicide attempt and/or suicidal thoughts (42%), loneliness/social isolation (63%), transphobic abuse /hate crime (51%), domestic abuse ( 21%), family breakdown (32%), work issues (25%). All perceived or known to be because they are transgendered.

TG PALS helps transgender people of all ages and from all walks of life. Statistically we are all likely to meet a person with a form of gender variance at some point in our lives, some of whom may be leading contented lives. Many more will not and will be struggling in silence and isolation. Our completely confidential services have been proven to make a significant difference to the lives of those we have and do support. Comments from some can be seen on our website guestbook.

An even more isolated group are the partners and families of transgender people. A gender transition inevitably means a loss of the persona known - sons, daughters, Mums, dads, husbands, wives...the ripple-effect on family and friends means that they also need support for issues. There are many feelings they may not understand as they come to terms with the change in their loved ones and the impact it can have on their own lives and sense of self within relationships. We support families through their own processing period.

We appeal for assistance in continuing our work with those who remain marginalised and isolated for fear of rejection and abuse but who, like us, are just ordinary human beings trying to live the ordinary lives many people take for granted.

Please give generously. Thank you so much from everyone at TGPALS.
