Story
This summer (2019) I'll be volunteering in a rural school in Nepal, which was heavily struck by the 2015 earthquake. NOT A PENNY OF THE MONEY RAISED WILL BE SPENT ON PERSONAL/TRAVEL EXPENSES OR CHARITY ADMIN COSTS. 100% of the money I raise will go directly to the local school I’ll be working with. I really believe that this is a great way of making a direct impact, as it ensures that donations go to where they are really needed most.
The Charity I’ll be working with is a local NGO called HELP (Helambu Education and Livelihood Project): http://www.help-nepal.org
They work with approximately 90 schools in rural villages within the Helambu region, helping over 10,000 children. The schools are extremely basic, receiving little or no government funding, and on top of this, the earthquake destroyed many school buildings. HELP works to improve the standard of education in these schools through the running of various community led projects which include providing school supplies, developing infrastructure, ensuring teachers get vital training, and the international volunteering programme which I will be taking part in. International volunteers, like myself, have been proven to have a significant impact. Not only do we work directly with the young students (teaching English classes, other subjects when needed, and running extra-curricular activities) but we also provide training to the native teachers – helping them both with their English (which often is not fluent) and their teaching methods. This brings sustainability to volunteering efforts, as it ensures that our work continues to have an effect on students after we have finished our placement.
I am really excited to begin my work in Nepal, and I hope you too wish to support HELP in its endeavour to improve education in this LEDC, and thus give more young people the opportunity to escape the cycle of poverty. Thank you in advance for any donations!
