We train & support voluntary organisations to reduce isolation immigration detention.

Story

I'll be running the British 10k this July in support of the small and incredibly hard working charity, AVID (Association of Visitors to Immigration Detainees).

For the last 20 years, AVID has supported volunteer visitors groups across the UK. They've trained hundreds of volunteers, who in turn have supported thousands of detainees. They've provided information, resources, and one-to-one support and advice to groups all over the country. They've helped set up new groups as the use of detention has grown. Their newsletters and briefings help ensure accurate information on the use of detention reaches hundreds of people each month. Their handbooks are relied upon by the volunteers visiting detention centres every week and their advocacy work ensures that the realities of detention as told to them by visitors and detainees reaches policy makers. Their work affects every detainee in the country. AVID upholds the human dignity and well-being of immigration detainees. They do this by voicing the concerns of those detained, their member groups and the nationwide network of visitors, and by supporting and coordinating visiting nationally.

“I don’t know when I’m going to get back to my life. Could be any time, could be five years. We don’t know. That’s what’s killing us here." Ahmed, Iran, detained for over a year.

About the charity

We are the national network for voluntary organisations providing support inside immigration detention. People in detention are cut off from their support networks indefinitely. This has a huge mental health impact. Volunteer visitors, who provide emotional and practical support, can be a lifeline.
