As some of you may know Kevin’s four-year-old son, Kiran was diagnosed with this terrible muscle wasting disease (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy) just a year ago and of course our whole world was turned upside down.
Well, we have all been trying to think of ways that we can help raise funds for research into finding a cure, or treatment for Kiran and the other boys with Duchenne. We needed something that would provide a challenge of such a scale that we would earn the full support of all our family, friends colleagues and beyond.
So…in a moment of inspiration (some may say madness!) Ollie proposed that running a Marathon was required! But not just any marathon, the Berlin Marathon. Kevin (Kiran's Dad) and Justin and Ollie (Kiran's Uncles), are committed to doing their ‘personal best’ to raise over £10,000 to fund vital research into developing an effective treatment for Kiran and others with this rare genetic disease.
We are lucky enough to have the strength that will carry us around the 26.2 mile course and we aim to add our story to the thousands of others before us. While our task in no way compares to the challenge facing the boys with Duchenne we are united in our challenge to run for those who cannot.
The three of us face our own challenges: Kevin, in his first marathon endeavour, has been beset by injury since starting training . . . first, a torn calf muscle after attempting a 5K race, followed by an Achilles tendon injury for which he is receiving physiotherapy and acupuncture - only his courage and determination will carry him through! Justin, this being his second marathon, hopes to beat his personal best of 4.30 hours - he knows what he's in for so credit to him! Ollie, a seasoned marathoner (does that word even exist?), hopes to achieve his ultimate target of 2.45 hours to take him into the ranks of the elite!
The training has started, with four months of persistent and hard work ahead of us and as a major step on our path to marathon glory we are doing the Sheffield Half Marathon on Sunday May 27. Testing ourselves against competition conditions in the City of Seven Hills with be a baptism of fire for some and a chance to break in the new trainers for others but whichever way you look at it the fundraising rollercoaster is most definitely ‘up and running’!
An important note for the rest of our family, especially Penny and Caroline . . . you may feel that they have taken the easy option but please think further. Daily massages, pre-race pasta dinners and motivational speaking are just some of the delights that lie ahead for the ‘crew’ - basically, were all in it together!
We’re all doing our ‘personal best’ and we ask you to support us all the way - please help us to fund those with the skill, dedication, and knowledge to unlock the secrets, that can stop the progressive muscle wasting that occurs in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. We are confident with your help we really can make a difference.
