Melanoma 1000 · 1 October 2022
Hi everyone and many thanks for taking the time to visit our page. I hope that you will be able to support us in our Melanoma 1000 challenge - the latest step in our fight against Melanoma. We will be running, jogging, walking, cycling to hit our target total of 1,000 miles! We have 7 months to complete the challenge - it's roughly the equivalent of 4.7 miles every day!
For those of you that don't know, our story is that after a visit to the GP in 2015 to get a mole on my neck checked out, I was diagnosed with a stage 1 melanoma. It was removed at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford, and I also had sentinel lymph node (SLN) removal, which proved to be negative.
After 5 years of clear check ups, it has unfortunately returned. At the end of January 2022, I had a bleed on the brain. Initial thoughts were that I'd had a stroke, but scans and a biopsy confirmed that it was in fact a return of the melanoma that had spread to my brain and chest. As a result I was diagnosed with Advanced Stage 4 metastatic melanoma, with 5 lesions in my brain and 2 affected lymph nodes in my chest. As I have the BRAF mutant version of melanoma, I’m currently on Targeted Therapy under the Churchill Hospital at Oxford and am being brilliantly well looked after by the fantastic Oncology team there.
My recent first 3 month progress scan showed that I have had a partial response to the treatment and that there has been some reduction in the size of the tumours.
