Neil and Carmel Ashby's page in memory of Teddy

As you will no doubt now be aware, we lost our brave Teddy on Thursday 9th June 2011. He was exactly 11 months old. He died from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (Type 1). The condition affected the motor neurons in his spine and therefore his ability to move. He inherited the condition from a combination of both our genes. He got increasingly weaker as more muscles were affected. Ultimately his ability to swallow and breathe became impaired. His cognitive function was not at all affected which meant that mentally, he was a normal, exceedingly bright and happy baby boy (as you can tell from the photo).
Throughout the worst of Teddy’s illness we were assisted and given invaluable support and care by the Colchester Children’s Community Nursing team. Without them it would have been impossible to care for Teddy at home in the manner that we were able to.
We realise that people may wish to send flowers for Teddy, but we believe that the money would be better spent in helping the Children’s Nursing team to continue to provide support, care and comfort to families in similar situations to ours.
