Story
A few years ago, I was lucky enough to teach a wonderful student, Bailey. He was funny, cheeky and lovely. He and his siblings all suffered from Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and received support through wonderful parenting, family, supportive staff in the environments around them and later, specialist schools.
Tragically at the beginning of 2023, Bailey passed away.
Bailey was a wonderful student and I'm so proud to be able to say I was his teacher. My heart goes out to everyone who was touched by his life.
In his memory and to raise awareness, I will be cycling 10 miles a day for every day of March.
FASD- Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder- is the result of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition with lifelong cognitive, emotional and behavioural challenges. In addition to effects on the brain, FASD is a full-body diagnosis that can include more than 400 known conditions.
1.8 to 3.6% may have FASD. Although it is expected to be higher.
That means 1.2-2.4 million in the UK may have FASD
The National Organisation for FASD (formerly NOFAS-UK) builds brighter tomorrows through FASD prevention, support and training.
