Story
Children with disabilities are amongst the most marginalized sections of society in India. While in the last decade and a half, there has been a growing awareness and significant achievements, a large number of physically and mentally challenged children, particularly in rural villages, still live in alienation and isolation. Only 3 out of every 10 children with a disability in rural Pondicherry have access to rehabilitation services, and 50% of these children eat only one meal a day.
Satya Special School is an NGO that provides home based services to disabled children in rural villages in Pondicherry. From small beginnings in 2003 with 20 children, Satya today caters to 520 children with special needs. With over 77 qualified staff, they function in two urban and three rural centres.
The Kodathur Village Rehabilitation Centre which is being constructed will be the first village centre for children with special needs and is expected to provide support to over 100 children. The centre will be run by qualified professionals and will ensure a new era of quality care and improved living for children with disabilities and their families. It will have facilities for physiotherapy, solar powered hydrotherapy, speech therapy, other activities for daily living, a kitchen and dining hall and outdoor play equipment which is accessible for the disabled.
By helping to build the village centre with the local community, you will be changing the lives of children in Pondicherry for many years to come.
