Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I will be running the Liverpool Rock 'n' Roll Half marathon(AM I CRAZY?) on the 29th of May for ACLT.
ACLT is an independent charity based in the UK which strives to increase the number of ethnic minorities on the UK stem cell (bone marrow), blood and organ donor registers. They provide a lifeline to those living with blood cancer or other illnesses where a transplant is required to save a life.
Someone is diagnosed with blood cancer every 20 minutes, 2000 people(approx.) in the UK need a stem cell transplant from a stranger each year; this is usually their last chance of survival.
Bone marrow contains racially specific characteristics; the chances of finding a match are greater if the donor is from the same racial background as the recipient. Black, mixed race and minority ethnic patients have less than a 20% chance of finding a perfect match; compared to 60%-90% for white northern European patients.
- to support and assist people suffering from leukaemia, all bone marrow related illnesses such as aplastic anaemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma as well as anyone in need of a organ transplant
- to provide practical and home help, counselling, advice and moral support
- to educate the public about the need for better services which will assist all patients diagnosed as needing a donor
- to promote stem cell, blood and organ donation and register new donors
- to campaign for better services to improve outcomes for patients diagnosed with all blood cancers and in need of organ transplant
