Story

Thames Water's BAME+ & Allies Committee have chosen to support Reading Community Learning Centre as their local charity.

Reading Community Learning Centre (RCLC) exists to help marginalised women from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds to achieve their individual potential. The majority of the 300 women they support each year are migrants or refugees who speak little or no English, and often have limited experience outside of the home. No matter what barriers a woman faces, they work alongside her to overcome obstacles to integration and realising her aspirations. For many women, this includes improving her English, building confidence, making friends, volunteering locally, gaining qualifications, reducing loneliness and isolation and making friends or securing a job.

About the charity

Based in Central Reading, RCLC has been operating as an independent charity since 2007, and before that as part of the national charity, Workers’ Education Association, since the mid-1990s. We have over 20 years of experience in delivering services to support traditionally ‘hard-to-reach’ refugee and migrant women to be skilled, confident, and active citizens who are able to contribute to society by addressing barriers to learning, integration and employment. Many of the refugee and migrant women we support speak little or no English, and often have limited experience outside of the home; as a result, many are amongst the most isolated, deprived and vulnerable members of our community. To support women at our Centre, we offer a programme of outreach activities, free training classes, workshops, 1:1 information, advice and guidance, a Crèche and social opportunities which are designed to build confidence, increase skills and reduce social isolation. Our model encourages integration, community cohesion and breaking down barriers between cultures. In 2020-21, we supported over 300 women from 30 different countries of origin. No other service in Reading reaches such a diverse group of women, giving us a unique insight into the needs of local refugee and migrant communities.
