Celebrating the birthday of David Hughes

on 8 January 2021

Supporting our doctors, nurse and support staff save lives in Worcestershire through providing additional funds for care packages, services supplies, equipment and wellbeing fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

Story

David contracted Covid at the start of November last year and was admitted to hospital locally by ambulance on Saturday 14th November. He was intubated and put on a ventilator within hours of arriving at Good Hope hospital. There was no space on intensive care available so he was transferred to Heartlands hospital, where he spent a week on intensive care. Space locally was rapidly running short as hospitals reached full capacity and so he was deemed safe to transport to Worcester Royal Hospital.

After being transferred David’s condition deteriorated and Doctors warned us that he was unlikely to fight his battle with Covid. David is a strong and determined healthy man and he continued to fight hard to get back to his family. After 7 weeks on a ventilator in an induced coma David started to show signs of improvement and the hard working staff managed to get him off his ventilator.

Today is David’s 58th Birthday and he has been off intensive care for 4 days now. He is awaiting a transfer to a more local hospital to continue his lengthy recovery and rehab. He has extensive scarring on his lungs caused by the Covid and he is still unable to stand. His recovery will be long but we are so grateful for everything the staff have done to look after him.

We are asking for donations that will go towards supporting staff as they work in the most difficult conditions of their careers and continue to tirelessly work long and difficult shifts. We will always be forever grateful for the care and comfort they gave when we have been unable to do so.

WAH Charity is proud to be supporting Worcestershire Acute NHS Hospitals Trust staff and patients during the coronavirus crisis, to ensure that hospital and community services can continue to offer the best possible support to help save lives. The Trust is under increased pressure during the current pandemic to support their people in challenging conditions when their staff are going above and beyond to make sure that this high quality care continues during uncertain times. We are inviting people to generously donate funds so that we can work together to direct emergency funding to where the need is greatest. We are asking the public to donate what they can spare that will fund specific items such as; Food supplies, Medical equipment and services, consumable items such as disposable gloves and hand sanitisers.
